Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is under pressure due to corruption scandals involving his party and government officials.

The Spanish police conducted a search at the headquarters of the ruling Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) as part of an investigation into corruption allegations.

The investigation has been ongoing for one year and initially focused on a little-known former party member.

Background

High-ranking PSOE officials are accused of attempting to pressure investigators by using compromising information, including from their private lives, to obstruct probes against the ruling party.

Former Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is accused of exerting influence on decision-makers in 2021 to secure 53 million euros from the state COVID-19 rescue fund for the Spanish airline Plus Ultra.
