Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Faces Corruption Scandals

Zapatero initially claimed he only wrote general reports and expert opinions, but later acknowledged receiving around 700,000 euros, while investigators estimate the amount could be up to two million euros.

Manuel Cancio Meliá, a professor of criminal law at the Autonomous University of Madrid, stated that money flows appear to be documented in the case, which is why the investigating judge went to secure documentary evidence at the Socialist Party.

Investigations and Allegations

Cancio Meliá criticized Spanish media for presenting police and investigating judge theses as proven facts when only initial indications exist, not hard evidence.

The Socialists believe they are victims of a campaign by right-wing forces within the police and judiciary aimed at toppling the government.

Cancio Meliá does not rule out political interests behind the investigations.

Right-wing and conservative parties, as well as previous coalition partners including Catalan and Basque nationalists, are calling for early elections this year.

Political Fallout

Some members of the Socialist Party itself are also advocating for early elections this year.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced he intends to continue governing until the end of the legislative period in 2027.
