State security investigates after suspected sabotage at Ironman European Championships in Hamburg

The incident has triggered a criminal investigation. The Hamburg police stated that they are investigating on suspicion of attempted dangerous bodily harm as well as criminal damage in several cases. The investigation is being led by the state security division of the State Office of Criminal Investigation — the unit that is generally responsible for politically motivated offences.

Investigations and allegations

At least one 29-year-old Ironman participant crashed in this section. He suffered a fracture and had to be taken to a hospital. Whether the tire damage was also the cause of the crash „ist Gegenstand der polizeilichen Untersuchungen" (is the subject of the police investigations), the police said.

The distribution of the metal shavings is being assessed by the investigators as a targeted interference in the competition. In a triathlon-distance event, the athletes transition from swimming to cycling before they run — damaged tires significantly increase the risk of crashes on the bike. The fact that the shavings were distributed across several streets points, according to police, to deliberate preparation.

Search for witnesses

The Hamburg police are now seeking witnesses who made suspicious observations in Kirchwerder. This also applies to the evening and night before the race. In doing so, the investigators are looking both for possible acts carried out immediately before the competition and for indications of preparatory activities.

The Ironman European Championships in Hamburg are among the largest triathlon events in Europe. Thousands of athletes start there, and the course runs along public roads in several districts. The incident raises questions about the security of such major events, especially since the bike course was open to all participants and could not be fully closed off.

Significance for the sport and the event

The Hamburg police also asked that information be reported on persons or vehicles that were noticed in the Kirchwerder area in the days before the race. The police initially provided no further details about the nature of the metal shavings and possible tools used in the offence.

If the suspicion of sabotage is confirmed, it would be a rarely documented interference in a professional sporting competition in Germany. Comparable cases in which participants were harmed by objects placed on the course have in the past sometimes resulted in lengthy investigations, without charges always being brought.

The state security division of the State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case because a political or other overarching motive cannot be ruled out.
