Berlin, June 7, 2026
According to the ARD capital studio, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier can imagine Olympic Games in Germany in 2036 and is thereby supporting a bid that the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) will decide on in September.
In an interview with the ARD format "Bericht aus Berlin," Steinmeier said he wished that after Munich 1972, Olympic Games would finally take place in Germany again. He stated verbatim: „Ich wünsche mir sehr, dass nach München 1972 endlich wieder Olympische Spiele in Deutschland stattfinden." In doing so, the head of state is correcting his earlier position from 2025, in which he had rejected a bid for 2036 for historical reasons.
Historical concerns remain, support grows
According to the Federal President's Office, Steinmeier's historical concerns have not disappeared, but he is now firmly convinced that all involved will handle the date responsibly. Steinmeier also pointed to positive experiences as hosts of major sporting events: „Dass wir gute Gastgeber von sportlichen Großveranstaltungen sind, hat die Welt seit dem Sommermärchen 2006 in Erinnerung." The 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany is commonly known as the "Sommermärchen" (Summer Fairy Tale).
