Steven Spielberg: 'I Don't Even Use AI for Research'

A Filmmaker's Warning

Spielberg's stance carries particular weight given his early cinematic engagement with the subject. In 2001, he directed 'A.I. – Artificial Intelligence,' a film that explored the emotional life of a childlike robot named David, designed to replace offspring for childless couples.

Despite that thematic familiarity, Spielberg now sees a threat in the technology's rapid evolution. He issued a direct appeal to the American film industry: 'Hollywood must prevent AI from replacing us.'

The director warned that AI systems could mine the history of cinema to produce what he called a 'hybrid imitation' — a copy of things that humans created from their imagination and wealth of experience.

'It can steal our ideas from the past to create a hybrid imitation: an imitation of things that people have created from their imagination and their treasure trove of experience,' Spielberg said.

The Writers' Room Is Sacred

He was equally firm about the sanctity of the writers' room. 'But when I sit in a room with five writers, there is no place for AI at that table,' he stated, reinforcing his commitment to human collaboration.

Spielberg did concede a limited, practical role for artificial intelligence behind the scenes. 'AI may be useful for organizing film productions and creating a budget,' he noted, suggesting that administrative tasks, not artistic ones, could benefit from automation.

Ultimately, however, the director's personal verdict was absolute. 'That's why I don't need AI in my life,' he concluded.

A Limited Role for AI

The interview comes ahead of the release of Spielberg's next film, a science-fiction thriller titled 'Disclosure Day – Der Tag der Wahrheit,' which is scheduled to hit cinemas in June.

The project marks another chapter in a career that has consistently engaged with futuristic themes, from 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' to 'Minority Report,' yet its creator now stands as one of Hollywood's most prominent voices urging caution around the very technology that once inspired his storytelling.
