Hundreds of people were brought to safety in New Zealand's capital Wellington on Tuesday ahead of a storm surge with eleven-meter-high waves, while mayor Andrew Little declared a state of emergency for several southern coastal suburbs.
According to New Zealand's weather service, eleven-meter-high waves were recorded in Wellington's harbor. Wellington's mayor Andrew Little declared a state of emergency for the southern coastal suburbs of Owhiro Bay, Island Bay, Houghton Bay, and Breaker Bay, and urged people to flee to higher ground. "Zurückbleibenden werde nicht geholfen", Little warned, according to APA.
An evacuation order took effect early Tuesday morning. Police oversaw the operation and set up roadblocks to prevent people from driving to the coast. Residents were instructed to move to higher-elevation neighborhoods and to leave the affected areas immediately.
