Havana, June 9, 2026

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Cuba's northwest coast on Monday and was felt on the Caribbean island, in parts of Mexico, and in the U.S. state of Florida.

Epicenter and Magnitude

The tremor occurred at a depth of 26 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located approximately 104 kilometers northwest of the Cuban city of Mantua, about a two- to four-hour drive from the capital, Havana. As a result, the quake was clearly felt across large parts of western Cuba.

According to USGS seismologist Paul Earle, the earthquake was extremely unusual for this region of the Caribbean because it occurred within a tectonic plate. Intraplate earthquakes are generally less frequent and more widely scattered than those at plate boundaries. In Cuba, where many buildings are dilapidated due to decades of economic crisis, the quake nevertheless triggered significant concern.
