Stuttgart, June 8, 2026

The controversial Stuttgart 21 rail project is being delayed once again, according to information from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and SWR: the underground main station in Stuttgart is not expected to go into full operation until the end of 2031, as became clear from reports on June 8, 2026.

Background: From the original schedule to the latest postponement

The major project was originally scheduled to launch in December 2019. Subsequently, an opening of the underground station in 2029 or 2030 was discussed. Now the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) and SWR are reporting in unison that commissioning is being pushed back by at least another year to the end of 2031. This would bring the delay relative to the original schedule to roughly twelve years.
