London, 09 June 2026
Defending champion Tatjana Maria has advanced to the second round of the WTA grass-court tournament at London's Queen's Club, defeating Greece's Maria Sakkari 6:3, 6:3.
The 38-year-old from Bad Saulgau needed 1 hour and 25 minutes for her opening victory and delivered a focused performance on the grass. Following the win, she said: "Ich bin sehr glücklich und erleichtert. Denn ich war nervös."
Maria's appearance is particularly notable because she once again had to go through qualifying this year. The organizers chose not to award a wildcard to the world number 52, despite the fact that she had won the title at the same venue the previous year. Back then, she had pulled off a sensational run of victories against several top players, which is regarded as the biggest success of her career.
