Pfiffelbach, 29 May 2026

Thuringia's Alternative for Germany (AfD) chairman Björn Höcke used a state party congress in Pfiffelbach on May 29, 2026, to emphasize a hardline distance from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and to project confidence about upcoming elections.

Addressing delegates, Höcke delivered a sharp critique of the CDU, which he holds primarily responsible for what he described as the dire situation in Germany in 2026. He coined a derogatory term to describe the rival party's political trajectory.

"Halten wir uns fern von einer vermerkelten, ausgemerkelten CDU," Höcke told the party faithful, using a neologism that ties the CDU to the legacy of former Chancellor Angela Merkel.
