US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US combat helicopter near the coast of Oman overnight into Tuesday and has announced a response.
According to Trump, the aircraft was shot down during a patrol flight. In the incident in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important shipping routes for global oil transport, both pilots were quickly rescued according to the US military's account. "The two pilots were quickly rescued and are in stable condition," the US military said. The helicopter had crashed near the coast of Oman, according to the information.
Trump himself spoke of a shoot-down by Iran. The "New York Times" had previously reported on the crash. The president initially provided no details on his announced response. "Trump provided no details," the agency wrote in reference to the threat. Trump also did not publicly comment on any possible evidence for his claim.
