Athens, June 7, 2026
Two consecutive earthquakes struck the region of the island of Euboea in central Greece on Sunday and were clearly felt in the capital Athens, located about 90 kilometers to the south.
The Geodynamic Institute in Athens first registered a tremor of magnitude 4.8 at 12:58 p.m. local time (11:58 a.m. CEST). According to the institute, the epicenter was located in the area of the small town of Mantoudi on the island of Euboea, at a depth of about five kilometers. Due to the shallow focal depth, the quake was clearly noticeable across large parts of central Greece.
A short time later, a second tremor with a magnitude of 5.2 followed in the same region. According to local media reports, this stronger quake caused fear among the population. Many people left their homes and stayed outdoors, as eyewitnesses described.
