UN warns of "growing crisis" in the oceans and calls for urgent action

Specifically, the ice cover is shrinking and marine ecosystems are coming under increasing pressure. As the seas warm faster and sea levels rise faster, the strains on coral reefs, fish stocks, and coastal regions are intensifying. The report takes stock of these developments over a period of five years and brings together a wealth of physical, chemical, and biological data.

Shrinking ice cover, rising sea levels

A total of 600 scientists from around the world contributed to the more than 1,300-page report. Hundreds of experts from around the world paint a bleak picture of the state of the oceans and at the same time list concrete risks: rising water temperatures, more frequent heat waves at the sea surface, melting polar caps, and an accelerated rise in sea levels. According to the report, these changes extend into the atmosphere and intensify weather extremes on land.

The report also makes clear that tipping points are no longer a distant hypothesis. If, for example, coral reefs die off on a large scale or marine food webs permanently tip, the consequences would be felt by hundreds of millions of people who depend directly on healthy seas. The United Nations therefore link their warning to a clear call to governments, business, and civil society to expand protected areas, cut emissions, and make fisheries sustainable.

Tipping points draw closer

As the seas warm faster and sea levels rise faster, the threat to low-lying coastal areas and island states is also intensifying, according to the authors' assessment. The report draws on satellite data, oceanographic monitoring networks, and model calculations from around the world to quantify the extent of warming and ice loss. It is intended to serve as a scientific basis for international negotiations, for example within the framework of the upcoming UN Ocean Summit.

The authors emphasize that the ocean is not only a victim of global warming, but itself plays a crucial role in the global climate. As the Earth's largest carbon sink, it absorbs significant amounts of CO₂ and heat – a buffering function that is reaching its limits. The warmer and more acidic the seas become, the less able they will be to continue fulfilling this role, the researchers warn.

Appeal to politics and society

With the third World Ocean Report, the United Nations build on two previous reports. While earlier editions mainly summarized the state of knowledge, the new edition places greater emphasis on political options for action. The UN calls for existing agreements to protect the seas to be implemented more decisively and for new financial resources to be mobilized for marine protected areas and climate-resilient coasts.

The report was published on Monday – at a time when the consequences of global warming are visibly increasing in many regions of the world. For the authors, it is clear that the coming years will be decisive in preventing the worst. Without "urgent action," there is a risk of losing those ecosystems on which life on Earth depends.

In conclusion, the United Nations emphasize that solutions exist, but that political will is required. The Ocean Report is explicitly also intended as a guide: it shows which measures – from reduced emissions and sustainable fisheries to less plastic waste – can be implemented in the short term. The upcoming international conferences must now show whether the diagnosis will also lead to a therapy.
