A study published in the journal Science shows that employees working from home in the US are suffering more from social isolation and psychological stress after the pandemic – particularly those living alone.

The study analyzes survey data from more than 500,000 people in the US, comparing the period before the pandemic (2011 to 2019) with the period after (2022 to 2024). The focus is on how the significant expansion of home office work after 2020 has affected the social lives and mental health of employees.

According to the study, employees in professions with a high proportion of home office work spent more time alone after the pandemic. They did not compensate for the lack of contact in their daily work lives through additional private meetings or activities. At the same time, they reported a higher level of psychological stress than employees in professions where mobile work hardly increased.
