US tourist complains about 44-euro bill for two gelatos in Rome

In a direct quote, Nicole Ann said: "Ich habe das erst kapiert, als ich auf den Kassenzettel sah." According to her own account, she had understood that the two gelatos were supposed to cost 14 US dollars, currently a little more than twelve euros. She also complained that the ice cream shop had given the impression that the extras were included for free.

The tourist called the ice cream shop a "Touristenfalle" and spoke of "böser Abzocke." She called the gelato "das schlechteste Eis, das ich je hatte." There was initially no statement from the operator of the ice cream shop.

Prepayment as a risk

In the Facebook comments, however, many reported similar experiences. Outrageous prices have also been demanded for pizza, as other users noted. The case is thus part of a series of complaints about excessive prices in the Italian capital.

In Rome – one of the most visited cities in the world – tourists being ripped off happens more frequently. Prices in tourist districts are, as a rule, significantly above average, as travel portals also repeatedly report. In some ice cream shops, the extra portion of whipped cream is actually free – a service that many travelers only learn about by asking.

Tips against excessive prices

It is also common practice in Italy that – as with espresso or cappuccino – ice cream shops also require payment in advance, after which you receive the gelato. This prepayment practice can mean that the total price only becomes visible when looking at the receipt – a circumstance that makes it harder for customers to keep track.
