The Verdi trade union called for a nationwide 'hospital uprising' on Wednesday, mobilizing around 10,000 clinic employees across Germany to protest a federal government austerity package aimed at stabilizing health insurance contributions.
The protests, which Verdi described as a 'Klinik-Aufstand,' took place at hospitals in several cities including Berlin, Viersen, Finsterwalde, Beeskow, Templin, and Berlin-Lichtenberg. Staff gathered to voice their opposition to spending brakes planned for medical practices, clinics, and the pharmaceutical industry.
A package approved by the federal cabinet is intended to relieve statutory health insurers by 16.3 billion euros in 2027. The measure aims to offset an expected deficit and avoid higher supplementary contributions for members.
