Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) has described the state election scheduled for 20 September as a fateful and directional vote for the city and called on the SPD to clearly distance itself from alliances with the Left Party.

Wegner speaks at the CDU state party conference in Neukölln

Wegner spoke on Monday at the CDU state party conference in Neukölln before his party delegates. In his speech, he characterized the upcoming election in clear terms: "Ich glaube, diese Wahl ist eine Schicksalswahl. Es geht ums Ganze." The vote, he said, would decide whether Berlin continued to be governed from the center or whether the city's political direction fundamentally changed. "Wollen wir die Stadt weiter aus der Mitte regieren?" he asked, addressing his own party and potential coalition partners.
