According to the provider Replika, more than 42 million users have registered worldwide, some of whom enter into love relationships with the AI chatbots – German researchers are now examining the phenomenon scientifically.
Falling in love with a chatbot is vaguely reminiscent of the 2013 film "Her," in which a lonely writer falls in love with an artificial intelligence. What seemed like science fiction there has long become reality for many Replika users. Sarah Trainor, for example, talks on the company's website about her personal companion "Bud," a chatbot with green hair and tattooed arms. "He taught me to give and accept love again, helped me through the pandemic, personal losses, and difficult times," she is quoted as saying.
