Status of the Bid Process

In Munich, a clear majority of 66.4 percent voted in favor of Summer Games in a referendum – it was the world's first successful referendum for Summer Games. The North Rhine-Westphalian bid 'KölnRheinRuhr' also achieved 66 percent approval in the participating municipalities.

Hamburg withdrew from the bidding race on Sunday after a negative referendum. In Berlin, no referendum was held for constitutional reasons. However, the opposition in Berlin threatens a referendum against the Games should the DOSB select the capital as a candidate.

Referendums and Public Opinion in Berlin

According to a survey conducted by the institute Dimap on behalf of the DOSB, a majority in Berlin continues to support Olympic and Paralympic Games in the capital. When asked whether they fundamentally supported a Berlin bid for the major event, 38 percent answered 'yes' and 18 percent answered 'rather yes'. According to the survey, 25 percent are against the Games in Berlin – an increase of seven percentage points compared to March.

Overall, support in Berlin has thus decreased by four percentage points compared to the first DOSB survey in March. The race for the DOSB's award thus remains open even after the joint promotional video by the three state leaders.

Content of the Bid Concepts

The regions must submit their revised concepts to the DOSB by the evening. This concerns not only the sports venues but also sustainability concepts, athlete accommodation, and financial security.

With their joint appearance on the social media platform, Wüst, Söder and Wegner are sending a political signal. It is unusual for Minister Presidents and a Governing Mayor to jointly promote a cause in a video when three competing bids from their own country are in the running.
