A 16-year-old Afghan has been arrested in Vienna following burglaries at two tobacconist shops and has confessed to the crimes, according to police.

The youth broke into a tobacconist shop in the Alsergrund district at around 3:50 a.m. overnight into Sunday, as police reported. An attentive witness had observed the incident and raised the alarm.

Police were able to arrest the 16-year-old near the scene. He was carrying a balaclava and an emergency hammer, both suspected to be tools used in the crime, according to police. Suspected stolen goods from the first tobacconist shop were also recovered on his person.

Course of the Crime and Arrest

During the investigation, it emerged that the suspect is also believed to be responsible for a burglary at another tobacconist shop in the Währing district on the same night. The criminal police took over the further inquiries.
