An unprecedented heatwave caused 5,764 additional deaths in France between 17 June and 2 July according to provisional calculations. Particularly affected were elderly people aged 75 and over as well as the Île-de-France region, where mortality rose by more than 80 percent.
Severe storms with tennis ball-sized hail have caused heavy damage to cars, roofs, solar systems, and agricultural land in northern Italy. The farmers' association Coldiretti estimates the damage at several hundred million euros, while in the south temperatures above 40 degrees and wildfires continue to be reported.
