On the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, German historians paint a picture of profound alienation between Germany and the United States, only partially overlaid by former admiration and cultural fascination.

The Declaration of Independence of the United States was signed 250 years ago. From a German perspective, the country's former promises now seem unattainable to many people today: "250 years after the Declaration of Independence, the former promises of the USA seem unattainable to many," according to an overview by several media outlets. The question "From rags to riches, equal rights and opportunities for all?" is openly raised.

Tübingen Americanist Michael Butter describes the divide as a fundamental constant: "Eigentlich gibt es zwei Amerikas. This tension has run through German perceptions for a long time.
