67-Year-Old Woman Killed in Cow Attack in East Tyrol

The grazing area, which was not fenced but had warning signs, contained a medium-sized herd of cows, including calves. Several farmers jointly used the land for grazing.

Possible Triggers and Previous Incidents

Investigators are examining whether the herd, which included calves, was startled by a woman walking a large dog approximately 15 minutes before the fatal attack. Authorities have asked the woman to come forward but clarified she is not directly connected to the incident. The couple involved in the attack did not have a dog with them.

Three other individuals, including a veterinarian and his wife, were reportedly attacked by the same herd shortly before the fatal incident. No witnesses have come forward who saw the actual attack, leaving the precise circumstances unclear.

Safety Recommendations Reinforced

Following the tragedy, the Tyrolean Chamber of Agriculture and the Austrian Alpine Association (ÖAV) reiterated safety guidelines for interacting with grazing livestock. The recommendations, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders, emphasize avoiding contact with animals, particularly when dogs or mother cows are present.

Dogs should be kept on a short leash and unleashed immediately if an attack occurs. Walkers are advised to remain calm and leave the area quickly if the herd appears restless.

The ÖAV had previously highlighted these guidelines, which were created to prevent such incidents. The grazing area in Oberlienz, though marked with warnings, remains unfenced, raising questions about future safety measures.
