VIENNA, April 14, 2026
An 80-year-old German tourist died after falling from a boarding platform into the Danube River in Vienna on Tuesday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, was attempting to board a cruise ship near the Nussdorf area when she slipped into the water shortly before the vessel’s departure. Crew members immediately raised the alarm at 1:40 p.m. and pulled her from the river, but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Police spokesperson Philipp Haßlinger and Andreas Huber, a spokesperson for Vienna’s emergency medical services, confirmed the incident to Austrian news outlet *krone.at*. The crew’s swift response included pulling the woman from the water and initiating emergency procedures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident. "Es kann weder ein medizinischer Notfall noch fahrlässiges Verhalten ausgeschlossen werden," police stated, indicating that neither a medical emergency nor negligent behavior could be ruled out. An autopsy has been ordered to establish the precise cause of death.
Unanswered Questions and Next Steps
The incident has raised questions about safety protocols for boarding cruise ships along the Danube, particularly for elderly passengers. While the investigation is ongoing, officials emphasized that no clear evidence points to foul play or structural failure on the boarding platform.
