American actor Patrick Dempsey made clear in a guest column for the "Portland Press Herald" that he will not be running for a seat in the US Senate in his home state of Maine.

The 60-year-old, who became known to a worldwide audience through his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd in the hospital series "Grey's Anatomy," was responding to repeated speculation that he could enter the Senate race as a replacement for the withdrawn Democratic candidate Graham Platner. Dempsey wrote that he had recently been asked several times whether he could imagine running as a candidate. "Das ist schmeichelhaft und ich nehme das nicht auf die leichte Schulter," he said.

The background to the speculation was the scandal surrounding political newcomer Graham Platner, who had clearly won the Democratic primary in Maine in June and was considered a key candidate for the congressional elections in November. However, Platner withdrew from the campaign following allegations of sexual assault.
