The Belgian national football team faces the USA on Tuesday (02:00 CEST) at Lumen Field in Seattle in the World Cup Round of 16, but behind the scenes, simmering conflicts that have been brewing for years and a new dispute within the squad are weighing on the preparation.

After the 3:2 opening victory against Senegal, a video circulated on social networks showing Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois visibly avoiding each other during the celebrations. The scene fueled speculation about the state of the Belgian locker room ahead of the decisive knockout round. Coach Rudi Garcia, however, sees this as no obstacle for the clash with the United States.

The conflict between the two stars dates back to 2013. At that time, Caroline Lijnen, De Bruyne's then-partner, began an affair with the goalkeeper in Madrid. In 2014, Lijnen publicly addressed the incident, saying of her motivations: "Kevin had disappointed me, so I thought: why shouldn't I do the same?" Since then, the relationship between Courtois and De Bruyne has been considered permanently strained.
