Santa Clara, June 23, 2026

Algeria came from behind to beat Jordan 2-1 (0-1) in a World Cup group game in Santa Clara, California, on Tuesday, preserving its chance of advancing to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In front of 68,371 spectators at the San Francisco Bay Area stadium, Nizar Al-Rashdan fired Jordan in front in the 36th minute with a low shot from around 15 meters past Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane. The underdog from the World Cup debutant year defended that lead with a compact, massed defense and the occasional counterattack throughout the first half.

Algeria dominated possession but struggled for long periods to create clear chances against the deep-lying Jordanians. At the first drinks break, Algeria's possession share was over 75 percent, yet the side went into the locker room trailing. In the 34th minute, Riyad Mahrez, Premier League star and captain of Algeria, had a clear opportunity but failed to beat the young Jordanian keeper Yazeed Abu Layla.
