Rome, May 11, 2026 Potapova loses to Pegula in Rome WTA-1000 round of 16

Austrian tennis star Anastasia Potapova saw her strong run at the WTA-1000 tournament in Rome end Monday with a straight-sets defeat to fifth-ranked Jessica Pegula in the round of 16.

The 25-year-old, who had been enjoying a career-best season, pushed Pegula hard in the opening set before succumbing 6-7(6), 2-6 after one hour and 38 minutes on court. The loss marked Potapova's sixth consecutive defeat against the American.

Competitive First Set Ends in Tiebreak

Potapova started strongly, securing the first break of the match to lead 3-1. However, Pegula responded by winning four of the next five games to take a 5-3 advantage. The Austrian showed resilience with two crucial rebreaks at 5-5 and again at 6-6 after dropping serve.

The tiebreak proved decisive as Potapova saved two set points at 4-6 with aggressive play before Pegula converted her third opportunity after 63 minutes of play. The narrow first-set loss appeared to drain Potapova's momentum heading into the second frame.
