Vienna, 30 June 2026

The heat wave with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees is pushing the organization Animal Welfare Austria in its animal shelter in Vösendorf to the limits of its capacity, after 250 wild animals were admitted last weekend alone and, during peak times, up to 30 emergencies per hour had to be treated.

Extent of the Situation

The organization Animal Welfare Austria has raised the alarm in view of the ongoing heat. According to operations manager and animal shelter director Stephan Scheidl, 250 wild animals had to be cared for last weekend, with up to 30 animals arriving per hour at peak times. "Jeder weitere Hitzetag bringt noch mehr dehydrierte Tiere. Es fühlt sich an wie ein Tsunami aus leidenden Wildtieren, der über uns hereinbricht," said Scheidl. Currently, around 3,000 animals are being cared for at the animal shelter in Vösendorf.
