Anna Netrebko cancels Madrid performances due to exhaustion

The "extreme weather conditions" in summer Madrid, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees, further aggravated the soprano's discomfort, according to sources close to the artist. She expressed her regret over the cancellation.

Heat in Madrid as additional strain

In a statement from the opera house, it was said that Netrebko's doctor had ordered her, "in order to prevent actual damage" to her voice, to "unfortunately take a break for some time."

According to the opera house, the Italian artist Eleonora Buratto will take over the leading soprano role of Leonora in "Il trovatore" for the July performances at the Teatro Real. Buratto will step in for the dates on the 6th, 9th, 13th, as well as one additional date.

The cancellation comes during a phase in which Netrebko remains in international demand despite health setbacks. She had only recently completed performances in several European countries, including concerts featuring demanding repertoire. The strain from the travel schedule and the summer heat in southern European cities had taken its toll.

Perhaps one could speak of luck in misfortune that this did not occur during the main season, Netrebko further explained. The Teatro Real is one of the most renowned opera houses in Europe and regularly attracts an international audience during the summer season.

Regardless of the current health-related break, Netrebko's career continues to be accompanied by political controversy. Following the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in 2022, she faced criticism over alleged proximity to President Vladimir Putin. This debate has accompanied the singer at international engagements ever since.

The Teatro Real expressed understanding for the singer's decision and pointed to the short-notice solution with Eleonora Buratto. Ticket holders were asked to contact the opera house's box offices if needed.

When Netrebko will return fully to the stage is currently unclear. The singer herself spoke only of a break, in order to avoid causing permanent damage to her voice.

With Buratto stepping in, the cast of the production of "Il trovatore" at the Teatro Real remains secured despite the cancellation. The opera house announced the swap on relatively short notice.

For Netrebko, there is no question that she wants to return to the stage after her recovery break – even though it is currently unclear exactly when this will happen.
