Antonelli tops sole Zandvoort practice session

Mercedes brought a series of small aerodynamic updates to Zandvoort, and Antonelli's pace suggested the package was working as intended at a circuit that rewards medium-speed cornering balance. George Russell, his teammate, also featured prominently in the upper part of the classification, underlining the Brackley-based squad's competitiveness on the narrow coastal layout.

McLaren's Lando Norris, the championship leader entering the round, ended the session within a few tenths of the pace and appeared comfortable on both tyre compounds. His teammate was also inside the top ten, indicating that McLaren's usual race-trim advantage remained intact despite the truncated running.

Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton split their programmes between long-run and qualifying simulations, with Leclerc focusing on single-lap work and Hamilton gathering data on higher-fuel loads. Both drivers finished the session within a second of Antonelli's benchmark.

McLaren and Ferrari close behind

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, racing in front of his home crowd, ran a more conservative programme focused on race preparation. Verstappen ended the session outside the top five but was believed to be working with a heavier fuel load, a common approach when teams have only one hour of free practice before a sprint weekend.

Track conditions were warm and dry throughout, with ambient temperatures climbing into the high twenties Celsius and a light wind off the North Sea. The smooth asphalt offered little grip off-line, prompting several drivers to complain about the limited running available to scrub in the green surface.

Limited running raises the stakes

Several midfield runners also used the session productively. Teams running updated floor packages reported encouraging initial data, though the absence of a second practice hour made it harder to cross-check correlation between the simulator and real-world behaviour. Strategists will rely heavily on historical Zandvoort data when setting tyre plans for Saturday's sprint.

The format leaves little margin for error. With no further practice, teams must commit to sprint race setups after a single hour of running, and any car damage from the sprint will carry directly into qualifying and the Grand Prix. Mechanical reliability and clean wheel-to-wheel combat will therefore be at a premium over the next 48 hours.
