Kansas City, June 24, 2026
Lionel Messi celebrated his 39th birthday on Wednesday at the Argentine World Cup camp in Kansas City and, with additional World Cup goals, surpassed the goal record of Miroslav Klose.
In the midst of the tournament's daily routine in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, all eyes were on the Argentine number 10 on Wednesday. Teammates surprised Messi at the camp in Kansas City with a birthday cake made of sweets, on which 39 candles were burning. They also sang him a serenade – promptly at 10 a.m. and at 10 p.m., matching the legendary jersey number, as an Argentine host had previously called for on Instagram.
Even before the official celebration, the Argentine Football Association had offered its congratulations on social media. "39 years of Lionel Messi: The man who has changed the history of world football. Greater every day," the South American federation wrote. FC Barcelona, which had accompanied the forward for over twenty years, also chimed in: "39 years of greatness" was the message on Instagram, garnished with the addition "Thank you for existing, 10."
