Miami, 03 July 2026
Defending champion Argentina faces underdog Cape Verde on Saturday (0:00 CEST) in the World Cup Round of 16 in Miami, with the island nation aiming to cause an upset as the smallest country ever to reach a World Cup knockout stage.
The circumstances could hardly be more different. On one side, reigning world champion Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, who with six tournament goals and a total of 19 World Cup goals is now the sole all-time record scorer. On the other, Cape Verde – an island nation with barely more than half a million inhabitants that has qualified for a World Cup knockout stage for the first time. The match will be played in Miami, Messi's adopted home, where he has been playing for Inter Miami since summer 2023 and has become an economic and media icon.
