A man sought under a European arrest warrant has been apprehended in Romania after he is alleged to have attacked an 87-year-old woman in her apartment in the city of Salzburg.
The case had caused a stir in recent weeks because the suspect had evaded the authorities and had fled beyond Austria's borders. According to the Salzburg correctional institution (Justizanstalt Salzburg), the wanted man was eventually located and apprehended in Romania. The arrest took place as part of international cooperation between Austrian and Romanian police authorities.
According to current investigations, the suspect is said to have forcibly opened the elderly woman's apartment door and attacked her in such a way that she fell to the ground. The man himself stated that there had been no deliberate use of violence against the victim; rather, the 87-year-old had fallen as a result of the forcible opening of the door.
