British police arrested several people over the weekend near the US-used military base RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, while the site serves as an air force staging ground in the war against Iran.
According to British security authorities, the arrests took place in the vicinity of Royal Air Force Base Fairford, which has played a central role in US military operations for decades. The authorities initially commented only cautiously on the number and identity of those detained and on the specific charges. Investigations are ongoing, police and the Home Office said.
RAF Fairford was already an important base for US forces during the Cold War and the Gulf War and, due to its long runways, is also used for heavy bombers. In the current conflict with Iran, the site continues to serve as an air base for US Army operations. This gives the facility a strategic significance that extends far beyond the local security situation.
