Astronomers have used the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile to discover a curious celestial body in the CD-35 2722 star system that orbits a brown dwarf and whose precise classification as an exomoon or planet is still being debated.
The team, led by Kevin Hoy of the ESO, observed the companion of a brown dwarf, which itself orbits a red dwarf star. As the observations by Hoy and his colleagues show, the brown dwarf "wobbles" slightly along its orbit – an indication of the newly discovered celestial body. The researchers therefore cautiously speak of a "planetary-mass exosatellite".
What was discovered?
The brown dwarf is a kind of failed star: its mass is greater than that of planets, but smaller than that of "proper" stars, in which energy is continuously generated through the fusion of hydrogen into helium. Only deuterium, also called "heavy hydrogen", initially burns into helium. The newly discovered object has roughly 30 times the mass of the planet Jupiter and requires about 870 years to complete one orbit around its star.
The orbital period of the newly discovered celestial body around the brown dwarf is about 170 days. To prevent the number of planets in the Solar System from growing uncontrollably, astronomers then introduced "dwarf planet" as a new category – which now also includes Pluto. In the Solar System, we have a clear distinction between the planets and the Sun, which is why the definition of moons is simple, explains Alice Zurlo of the Universidad Diego Portales in Chile, an astronomer involved in the discovery.
