Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo – May 10, 2026
In northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, at least 69 people were killed in an attack by a local militia, as confirmed by two sources.
Background of the Violence
The attacks took place in Ituri province, a region that has been marked by ethnic conflicts and militia activity for years. The CRP (Coalition des Résistants Patriotes), a militia founded by Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga, has been increasingly active in the region since 2025. Lubanga was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2012 for using child soldiers and was released in 2020.
The violence escalated after the FARDC (Armed Forces of the DR Congo) attacked a CRP position. In response, Codeco militiamen from Pimbo attacked several villages on April 28.
