Austria faces Spain in first World Cup knockout match since 1954, leaning on pressing and ball-possession phases

Background: a rare knockout moment for Austrian football

Austria qualified for the knockout stage with a stoppage-time equaliser against Algeria, sealing a 3-3 draw that confirmed second place in the group. Spain, the reigning European champions and second in the FIFA world rankings, are the opponents. Bookmakers and forecast models give Austria between 15 and 20 percent chances of progressing. The Austrian Football Association's (ÖFB) last knockout match at a World Cup dates back to 1954; their appearances in 2014, 2018 and 2022 ended in the group stage or, twice, on penalties in the round of 16.

Spain arrive on a 33-match unbeaten run in regular time, 34 in competitive fixtures. Their last knockout win at a World Cup came in the 2010 final. Luis de la Fuente, who took charge of the senior team at the end of 2022 after leading Spain's Under-21s, was measured in his assessment: "Aber wir sind es auch, und es gibt noch einige andere in dieser Kategorie", meinte De la Fuente. "Für mich sind sie die Besten der Welt, das denken wir über uns selbst." He added that the tie would not feel like a final moved forward for his players: "Jeder wird rennen, bis er umfällt."

What's new since 1 July

Austria's central plank under head coach Ralf Rangnick has been a high, aggressive press. So far at this tournament it has not fully clicked. Too often the front line of the 4-2-4 shape used without the ball has pressed forward without the two following lines adjusting, leaving gaps that opponents have exploited. The team's last extended spell of true Rangnick-style pressing came in March 2025 against Serbia in a friendly; the qualification campaign itself often showed only a "Lüfterl" — a breeze — of the team's best work.

Pressing has not yet clicked

Florian Grillitsch, the 30-year-old midfielder who came on at half-time against Algeria for Xaver Schlager and made his first appearance of the tournament, is expected to offer Austria more composure on the ball. His last start for the national team was the March friendly win over Ghana (5-1). "Das Spiel mit dem Ball ist meine Kernkompetenz", sagte der Niederösterreicher. "Unser Plan ist klar, unsere Identität, Energie und Intensität reinzubringen." Asked about defending Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old Barcelona winger, Grillitsch was blunt: "Du wirst ihn nicht zu 100 Prozent ausschalten können."

Mwene, before his injury was confirmed, had been expected to take responsibility for Yamal. He said of the teenager: "Er hat alles, was einen Weltklasseflügelspieler auszeichnet – super Technik, Tempo im Eins-gegen-Eins, einen brutalen Abschluss." Mwene added: "Es wird oberste Priorität sein, ihn nicht auf seinen starken linken Fuß zu lassen." With Mwene out, the question of who starts at left-back is open. He started against Jordania (3-1) and Algeria but did not feature against Argentina (0-2).

The Yamal problem

De la Fuente was asked about the late fitness of Yamal, who was eased back from injury during the group stage. "Lamine kann spielen, solange wir es von ihm wollen", said the coach. "Sie spielen zunehmend intensiver", meinte De la Fuente of Austria. On the tactical question of whether Spain would need to be more direct against a deep Austrian block, he was clear: "Sollte das ÖFB-Team sehr tief und kompakt stehen, wie sie es im Turnierverlauf mitunter auch bereits praktiziert hatten, müsste sein Team den Ball mit Genauigkeit zirkulieren lassen."

Austria believe they will need both intensity and recovery. Grillitsch summed up the balance: "Anders geht es nicht, sonst machst du dich kaputt." Without possession phases, he argued, the team cannot sustain its pressing. "Es ist ja auch so: Wenn wir den Ball haben, kann der Gegner kein Tor schießen." Grillitsch also reflected on a year in which he considered leaving the national team setup: "Es war vor einem Jahr schon so, dass der Hintergedanke da war, dass ich nur ein Jahr bleibe." He has developed into a key figure in the Rangnick era, having previously been a substitute at Euro 2020 under Franco Foda before publicly airing his frustration and becoming central to the run that ended against eventual champions Italy in the round of 16.

Spain's group-stage form included a goalless draw with Cape Verde in the opening match — a result that briefly made headlines because the islanders committed only one foul — followed by a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in which four of Spain's five tournament goals so far were scored. De la Fuente has called for patience with the recovering Rodri and Pedri, midfielders he previously oversaw in the youth teams alongside goalkeeper Unai Simón. "Wir waren bei allen mit ihrer Rehazeit geduldig", he said. "Dieses Nationalteam ist es gewohnt, Rekorde zu brechen."

Spain's mood: confident but cautious

De la Fuente was reluctant to read too much into other tournament upsets. "Wir gehen Schritt für Schritt, das Wichtigste ist das nächste Spiel", he said. "Wir haben alle Werkzeuge, die es braucht, aber müssen erst spielen." On penalties, his view was characteristically clinical: "Einen Elfmeter zu schießen ist nichts Zufälliges, wir haben dafür Spezialisten. Man müsse vor allem den psychologischen Aspekt berücksichtigen."

The Austrian camp is trying to convert the emotional high of the Algeria game into performance. "Wir müssen uns darauf besinnen, was uns hierher gebracht hat", sagte Mwene. "Wir sehen das Spiel mehr als Chance und wollen die Atmosphäre, das Stadion genießen", he added before his injury was confirmed. The ÖFB squad spent the early part of the World Cup preparation camp in Vienna dealing with what team manager Peter Schöttel described as "einen kleinen Rückschlag" — a small setback — before moving to the United States.

Cape Verde's 0-0 against Spain offers one tactical reference point: a compact shape, a crowded midfield and discipline. Austria deployed a 4-5-1 against heavy favourites in the past and may consider similar outlines. De la Fuente himself hinted that the two approaches will collide directly: "Wir werden sehen, welcher der gegensätzlichen Ansätze sich durchsetzen wird."

Spanish media sizing up Austria

Spanish media coverage has been mixed in tone. The sports daily AS recognises that Austria lacks international stars but still calls the team an "unangenehmer und harter Gegner". La Razón describes Austria as an "unkomplizierten Gegner". La Vanguardia expects a "hart umkämpftes, körperbetontes Spiel". Marca warns that Austria's record goalscorer Marko Arnautović — described as a "schwer zu bezwingender Fels" at 37 — must be contained.

The Spanish coach struck an optimistic note on his side's progression through the tournament so far. "Ich werde jeden Tag optimistischer. Ich sehe, wie sie sich ständig verbessern", meinte De la Fuente. On the psychological balance in his squad, he added: "Für manche ist es schwierig, andere lieben es, wenn sie unter Druck stehen. Wir wollen, dass alle frisch sind im Kopf."

Austria, for their part, are treating the tie as a bonus game after surviving the Algeria scare. The country has reached this stage only sporadically in modern history; the draw has handed them the toughest possible opponent on paper. Grillitsch was candid: "Die Spanier werden sicher spielerische Lösungen gegen unser Pressing finden. Dafür brennt jeder." Mwene added: "Ich verspüre mehr Vorfreude als Nervosität oder Aufregung." Whether Austria can recover the pressing intensity that defined their qualifying campaign — and pair it with the ball-possession phases Grillitsch describes as his own "Kernkompetenz" — will determine whether this World Cup story continues beyond Thursday night in Los Angeles.
