Kansas City, June 28, 2026

Austria qualified on Saturday in Kansas City for the World Cup Round of 16 with a 3-2 (2-1) win over Algeria, meaning the country plays in a World Cup knockout round for the first time since 1954.

Historic qualification for the Round of 16

Ralf Rangnick's team prevailed in a highly dramatic group-stage match against Algeria and will face European champions Spain on Thursday at 9:00 PM CEST. The match will be broadcast live on Servus TV. Even before the game, Austria and Algeria had agreed that a draw would be a sufficient result for qualification. In the end, after 90 plus three minutes, the result was a narrow victory that carried the team into the Round of 16.

The decisive goal was scored by Kalajdzic, who found the equalizer just 61 seconds after coming on as a substitute. The 28-year-old Viennese, who has suffered three cruciate ligament tears in his career and is considered a towering two-meter striker, was visibly moved after the goal. "Gefühlt bin ich irgendwie im Schock," he said after the match. He added: "Es ist einer der schönsten Momente in meiner Karriere. Es ist schön, dass ich das auch mit dem Nationalteam erleben durfte". Kalajdzic had previously contributed at LASK after a strong spring season to the club's first titles in 61 years, and had scored at both a European Championship (2021) and a World Cup.
