Austria’s Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW) has published an updated handbook on far-right extremism, revealing a sharp rise in extremist crimes and detailing the movement’s historical roots and modern networks.

Rising Extremist Crimes

The handbook, titled *Handbuch des Rechtsextremismus in Österreich* (*Handbook of Right-Wing Extremism in Austria*), documents a troubling increase in far-right incidents. Cases rose from 1,208 in 2023 to 1,486 in 2024 and are projected to reach 1,986 in 2025. Nearly 62% of police-reported extremist crimes in 2024 involved violations of Austria’s Nazi prohibition law, primarily related to neo-Nazi propaganda. Over a quarter (27.2%) of incidents occurred online.
