The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) will issue a formal reprimand to mathematician Karl Sigmund for his meetings with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein but has decided against revoking his membership following an ethics investigation.
The ÖAW’s presidency announced it would follow the recommendation of an internal ethics committee to "express disapproval" of Sigmund’s encounters with Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while facing charges of sex trafficking minors. The decision comes after Sigmund himself requested a review of his membership, which dates back to 1999, in light of the meetings.
Ethics Committee’s Findings
The ethics committee, led by Protestant theologian and ethics expert Ulrich Körtner, conducted a thorough examination of Sigmund’s interactions with Epstein. In a statement transmitted to the Austrian Press Agency (APA), the committee stated: "After a comprehensive review and a hearing, the committee recommends refraining from revoking membership but issuing a reprimand to Sigmund due to the two meetings and his awareness of Epstein’s depravity."
The committee emphasized that the reprimand serves as a signal that the academy takes "questions of scientific ethos and integrity seriously." The ÖAW presidency confirmed it would adopt this recommendation.
