The Austrian government has nominated former Neos politician Gerald Loacker as the country’s representative to the European Court of Auditors, triggering sharp criticism from coalition partners and opposition parties.

Nomination Process and Requirements

Loacker, a 52-year-old lawyer and business consultant, must still undergo approval by the National Council’s main committee and a hearing in the EU Parliament’s Budget Control Committee before assuming the Luxembourg-based role in early October. His term would run until 2032, succeeding current Austrian member Helga Berger, whose mandate ends in July.

The nomination followed an internal Neos selection process after their initial candidate, Helmut Berger—former head of the parliamentary budget service—withdrew in early March due to personal reasons. Three applications were submitted via the federal government’s electronic platform, with Loacker ultimately selected. According to the Council of Ministers’ minutes, he is deemed "highly suitable" for the position, which carries a gross monthly salary of €27,000.
