VIENNA, April 23, 2026

Austria’s energy price index jumped 9.1% from February to March 2026, driven by soaring fuel costs linked to global supply disruptions from the Iran war, according to official data released Tuesday.

The sharp increase marks the steepest monthly rise in household energy costs this year, with heating oil prices skyrocketing by 42.8% month-over-month and 38.2% annually. Gasoline and diesel prices also saw double-digit spikes, while electricity and district heating bucked the trend with modest declines.

Fuel Costs Drive Inflation

The conflict in Iran has triggered severe restrictions on global oil and gas supplies, sending energy markets into turmoil. Austria’s Energy Agency (AEA) reported that diesel prices surged 23.9% in March compared to February, while gasoline rose 14.8% over the same period. Year-over-year, diesel costs climbed 21.9%, and gasoline increased by 12.1%.

"Heizöl stieg gegenüber dem Vormonat um 42,8 Prozent, auf Jahressicht verteuerte sich der Brennstoff um 38,2 Prozent," noted the Österreichische Energieagentur, highlighting heating oil as the worst-hit commodity. The agency attributed the spikes to supply chain disruptions and heightened demand for alternatives amid the crisis.

Wood-based fuels also grew costlier, with pellet prices rising 0.9% monthly and 27.9% annually, while firewood saw a 0.3% monthly uptick but only a 0.2% annual increase.
