VIENNA, April 14, 2026

The Austrian National Council has unanimously agreed to examine the potential shutdown of the Imam-Ali-Zentrum in Vienna-Floridsdorf amid suspicions of its ties to the Iranian regime.

Suspicions of Iranian Influence

The Imam-Ali-Zentrum, a cultural and religious center in Vienna, has long been under scrutiny for its alleged connections to Tehran. According to the Documentation Center for Political Islam in Vienna, a 2022 report detailed efforts by the Islamic Republic to exert influence in Austria through the center. The findings raised concerns among Austrian authorities about foreign interference in domestic affairs.

The center, which serves as a hub for Shia Muslim activities, has been accused of promoting ideologies aligned with Iran’s political leadership. While it officially operates as a cultural institution, critics argue it functions as an extension of Tehran’s influence abroad. The unanimous decision by the National Council reflects growing unease over such foreign-linked entities operating on Austrian soil.

Violent Clashes and Security Concerns

Tensions at the Imam-Ali-Zentrum escalated in early March when a mass brawl broke out between supporters and opponents of the late Iranian spiritual leader Ali Khamenei. The violent altercation, which involved dozens of participants, drew significant police intervention and heightened scrutiny of the center’s activities.
