April 15, 2026 The Austrian ski team has announced a major restructuring of its coaching staff, with former ski stars Matthias Mayer and Roland Assinger taking key roles to bolster athlete development for the upcoming European Cup season. The new coaching lineup will see Matthias Mayer leading the all-round group, while Roland Assinger will oversee the speed team. Günther Steiner remains as team leader of the technique group, ensuring continuity in training methodologies. The changes aim to provide better support for athletes and enhance their preparation for the World Cup circuit.
New Coaching Structure
The reshuffle brings together a mix of experienced coaches and fresh perspectives. Mayer, a retired Olympic champion, will focus on nurturing all-round talent, leveraging his extensive competitive background. Assinger, another former top skier, will apply his expertise to the speed disciplines, where technical precision and agility are critical.
Head coach Marko Pfeifer emphasized the strategic importance of the new setup. "Die Kombination aus Erfahrung und neuen Impulsen im Trainerteam wird uns helfen, die nächsten Schritte im Europacup zu machen," Pfeifer said, highlighting the blend of experience and innovation in the coaching team.
Focus on Athlete Development
The restructuring is part of a broader effort to elevate Austria’s performance in international competitions. By dividing responsibilities among specialized coaches, the team hopes to address the unique needs of different skiing disciplines more effectively.
