The AHS-Gewerkschaft, Austria's secondary school teachers' union, has urged policymakers to prioritize reforms in early childhood education rather than focusing on secondary school curricula, citing alarming gaps in basic literacy skills among incoming primary school students.
Criticism of Current Education Priorities
Union representative Herbert Weiß criticized recent debates about replacing Latin with artificial intelligence (AI) in gymnasiums, arguing that such discussions distract from more pressing issues. "Momentan beschäftigt man sich mit Dingen, wo es eigentlich keine Probleme gibt - Stichwort KI statt Latein," Weiß said in an interview published by the APA. He emphasized that systemic problems in early education require immediate attention: "Und dort, wo man wirklich hinschauen sollte, tut man zu wenig."
Weiß warned that without early intervention, later efforts to address learning gaps would be ineffective. "Wenn man nicht früh genug anfange, helfe alles nachträgliche 'Herumdoktern' nichts," he added.
Alarming Literacy Statistics
The union pointed to the 2021 PIRLS reading study, which revealed stark disparities in Austria compared to international averages. While globally, a third of children lacked basic reading skills—such as letter recognition, word writing, and simple reading—at school entry, the figure in Austria was 62%.
