Canada's men's national soccer team will have to make do without Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies for the World Cup opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday (21:00/ARD and Magenta TV) in Toronto.

Injury from the Champions League semi-final

The 25-year-old left-back has not yet fully recovered from his thigh injury and is unavailable to coach Jesse Marsch. "He is unavailable," Marsch announced on Thursday. Canada is a co-host of the tournament and will play the first group match of the World Cup on Friday.

Davies suffered a muscle bundle tear in May in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. While he is already completing light training sessions according to club and federation statements, his fitness level is not yet sufficient for a World Cup appearance. An MRI scan on Wednesday, however, produced positive results and strengthened the hope of a later tournament appearance, it was said.
