Seattle, 16 June 2026

Belgium and Egypt drew 1:1 in their first group-stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday evening in Seattle.

The match in Group G ended 1:1 (1:1). This means the Egyptians are still waiting for their first-ever World Cup finals victory, even after the opening match of their fourth World Cup appearance. After their disappointing group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Belgium at least takes one point from the opener.

Unbeaten in Qualification

Both teams had gone through qualification unbeaten, which is why the duel was regarded in advance as carrying a particular tension. After their early elimination in Qatar, Belgium had set out to show a better side of themselves at the 2026 World Cup. The goalless draw on matchday one is, from a Belgian perspective, therefore a rather modest start to the tournament.
