Belgium face Senegal in the World Cup round of 16 in Seattle after both sides limped into the knockout stage through contrasting group-stage campaigns.
Belgium finished top of their group, but their path to first place was unconvincing. A 1:1 draw against Egypt in their opening match was followed by a 0:0 stalemate with Iran, leaving the team's attack — built around Kevin De Bruyne — short of rhythm. A 5:1 win over New Zealand in the final group game was the only performance in which the Belgians looked like their usual selves, and it was enough to secure first place and a meeting with Senegal.
Belgium's Stuttering Start
Senegal, by contrast, arrived at the tournament with off-field concerns after players reportedly raised issues about outstanding bonuses and the conditions of their accommodation. On the pitch, they opened with a 1:3 loss to France and then fell 2:3 to Norway, leaving them needing a result in their final group game. A 5:0 win over Iraq lifted Senegal into the knockout phase as the lowest-ranked of the eight third-placed teams to qualify.
