Nayib Bukele said on Thursday that El Salvador had launched a military operation to rescue Salvadorans abducted by gangs in Haiti, following reports that aviation technicians were being held.

Bukele directed his appeal to Haitian gang leaders and demanded that they return the abducted Salvadorans “alive, unharmed.” He said the captives were being sought through a military operation.

The confirmed details of the operation were limited in the available reports. The material did not specify its operational scope, the number of personnel involved or whether any of the abducted people had been released.

Haiti’s government issued a news release on Wednesday evening describing the abduction of aviation technicians as an “absolute priority.” It said resources were being mobilized to secure their release.
