Berlin, June 12, 2026

The Bundesrat on Friday in Berlin launched a legislative initiative submitted by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, aimed at banning the commercial trade of personal items belonging to victims of National Socialism.

Background: Auction as catalyst

The initiative provides that letters, diaries, Star of David badges, and other personal possessions of those persecuted by the Nazi regime may no longer be traded commercially in the future. Violations of the ban are to be prosecutable as criminal offenses. The Bundesrat passed the resolution on Friday in Berlin; the Bundestag must now consider the draft law, for which no fixed deliberation deadlines apply.
